Reaction?Induced Fracturing: When Chemistry Breaks Rocks
نویسندگان
چکیده
Reaction-induced fracturing occurs when fluid-rock interactions lead to the growth of a mineral phase that produces volume increase, which perturbs stress field and can cause in surrounding rock. This process may occur with positive feedback loop because, as more fractures are formed, water infiltrate pore space, enhancing kinetics reaction. Yoshida et al. (2020, https://doi.org/10.1029/2020JB020268) have studied modeled reaction-induced oceanic rocks collected during Oman Drilling Project. These been intensively hydrated by called serpentinization, has profound geodynamic implications. The authors couple detailed microstructural observations numerical modeling incorporates permeability evolution. Building on outcomes their study, I discuss here current knowledge process, chemical forces control rock fracture various geological environments. Based recent experimental results molecular dynamics simulations, conditions under either self-amplify or slow down even stop.

When it breaks , it breaks
Dependencies among software projects and libraries are an indicator of the often implicit collaboration among many developers in software ecosystems. Negotiating change can be tricky: changes to one module may cause ripple effects to many other modules that depend on it, yet insisting on only backwardcompatible changes may incur significant opportunity cost and stifle change. We argue that awar...
متن کاملThe Effect of Friction on Simulated Dynamic Fracturing of Rocks
During underground nuclear tests, rocks may fail by plastic yielding, which limits shear strength, or by tensile fracture, wherever maximum principal stress exceeds tensile strength. A third mode of failure exists due to friction along closed fractured surfaces. There, friction affects slipping and can thus limit stress. In this paper, we study the effect of friction on the simulated dynamic re...
متن کاملReopening the Convergence Debate when Sharp Breaks and Smooth Shifts Wed, 1870-2010
Abstract This paper attempts to re-investigate the catching-up (stochastic convergence) hypothesis among the selected 16 OECD countries applying the time series approach of convergence hypothesis with annual data over one century. To reach this aim, we propose a model which specifies a trend function, incorporating both types of structural breaks – that is, sharp breaks and smooth shifts usin...
متن کاملBiodegradation in Waters from Hydraulic Fracturing: Chemistry, Microbiology, and Engineering
Hydraulic fracturing is a method of oil and gas extraction from shale in which substantial volumes of water return to the surface containing chemicals and microorganisms. This paper begins to address the microbial composition and aqueous chemistry and the potential for intrinsic and enhanced bioremediation of these waters. The waters from a gas and oil shale in the Marcellus and Bakken regions,...
متن کاملSupersymmetry Breaks when Gauge Symmetry Breaks: Cybersusy I
This paper summarizes a new approach to supersymmetry breaking in the supersymmetric standard model (SSM). The approach arises from some remarkable features of the BRS cohomology for composite operators in the SSM, and the behaviour of those operators when gauge symmetry is spontaneously broken. A new realization of supersymmetry arises for these operators. This realization is equivalent to the...
